Family skiing photo uploaded by Ben Tubby
Last week, the NY Times published an article and slide show with tips on planning an affordable family ski weekend (I especially enjoyed the adorable photo of the pint-sized skier in the pink jumpsuit in the first frame). Growing up outside of Boston, my family wasn’t big on skiing, but I have fond memories of road trips to Pennsylvania to visit the grandparents and having sing-alongs in the back seat with my little brother. What are your favorite memories from a family vacation? Leave a comment, and let us know!

Indoor Skiing photo uploaded by
Winter, the outdoors, and fresh snow might be what you think of when the word comes to mind. Times are changing. are popping up throughout the world to provide an indoor skiing environment perfect for year-round skiing or for areas that never see a flake of snow.
Just off the New Jersey Turnpike, the is undergoing major construction in order to house the first in the United States. The 250,000 square foot ski area, , will be open all year and will feature a 140 foot tall run. To an expert skier this may seem inadequate but for novice skiers this is the perfect way to learn. Indoor skiing is a great way for kids to learn the sport as well given that they won’t have to battle harsh winter conditions.
For those who don’t wish to enter the giant refrigerator, the facility also plans to become the largest retail and entertainment complex in the U.S. Instead of skiing you can test your luck at skydiving in the vertical wind tunnel or take to racing on the raceway. Most importantly don’t forget to checkout It’s Sugar!, where you can travel by bridge over a 30-foot chocolate waterfall.
Can’t wait to keep your skills tuned all year-round? This 2 billion dollar complex is set to open in late 2008.

Mad River Glen
Photo uploaded by
With the emergence of the six person chairlift it may seam odd that a ski area would spend money to replace a single chair with yet another single chair. However, this is just what has done. The lift found at the resort is nationally the only one of its kind still operating and still in its original location. As the chair became old and worn decided to preserve and restore its historic icon. The ski area partnered with the and the and raised over $1.35 million. On opening day, December 6th, the revamped single chair once again began carrying skiers up the mountain.
Although the lift is up and running Mad River Glen still has way to go before they meet their $1.54 million goal. If you would like to help Mad River Glen achieve this goal, check out their .
